Monday 25th February 2019
Speaker: Dr Ingo Dierking\, School of Physics & Astronomy\, Universi ty of Manchester.
We are all familiar with 1-\, 2-\, and 3-dimensional geometric objects l ike lines\, circles\, triangles\, cubes or spheres\, and their use in the d escription of many simple structures such as streets\, football fields\, ho uses or cars. But how would you describe a cloud\, the roots of a tree\, a fern\, snowflakes\, the artery and capillary system of humans or equally co mplicated objects? In the late 1970s and 1980s\, some mathematics was formu lated that today is known as fractal geometry. It describes in simple terms the complex structures observed in nature as well as in mathematics.
I will demonstrate with our own work that fractal geometry can be used to model a variety of problems\, such as the spread of forest fires\, urban gr owth\, or epidemics.

Some of them are found in nature in microorganisms or plants and some others are synthesized by chemists\, such as insecticide s or plastics. The usual procedure for the synthesis of organic compounds i s the stepwise formation of the individual bonds in the target molecules\, molecules often inspired by compounds Nature makes. At present\, synthetic chemists have been challenged to develop much more efficient\, environmenta lly friendly\, novel and elegant organic reactions that could form bonds in one sequence without isolation of intermediates\, changing the reaction co nditions\, or adding reagents. We call this type of transformations cas cade reactions. Nature will always be the uncontested master\, but I d are say chemists are doing their job very well.

The Covid vaccines are estimated to have saved 20 m illion lives since the start of the pandemic. Two of these vaccines used a revolutionary biological approach to generating a medicine rapidly and flex ibly (mRNA)\, and a revolutionary innovation in delivering these medicines safely and effectively (lipid nanoparticles). This is likely to be the star t of a new generation of medicines made from nucleic acids\, and the start of a wave of medicines delivered precisely to different organs using new dr ug delivery carriers. This talk will discuss what is possible now\, and wha t might be in the future.

A talk on the important role that obscure but critical metals such as rare-earth elements\, lithium and cobalt play i n our modern high-tech society\, for electric vehicles\, wind turbines and beyond.
There is little doubt that the increased electrification of t ransportation and energy systems will be a pivotal part of our society’s re sponse\, to the challenges of climate change and the need to reduce polluti on. The deployment of the electrical machines and batteries required for th is great transition\, will depend entirely on access to a number of critica l metals\, and the robustness of their supply chains. Secondary production\ , through the re-use and recycling of components containing such metals\, i s an important part of the story\, but the primary production of critical m etals will continue to dominate for years to come.
This talk focuses on the challenges faced by the primary critical-metals supply chain \, and the part that it is has to play in meeting the technical and societa l challenges of our age.

World energy needs have evolved over recen t years which has driven countries to want energy independence by ever incr easingly low carbon electricity.
Therefore\, a new nuclear renaissanc e is emerging as a source of low carbon base load in the energy mix. With t he changes in country needs and evolution of nuclear technology\, safety re mains paramount to an ever changing industry.
There is a greater focu s on safety in the nuclear industry due to the perceived and realised conse quences when an event does occur. This talk aims to look at the challenges that the nuclear industry faces and how evolving requirements drive the art of producing a nuclear safety case.

X-ALT-DESC;FMTTYPE=text/html:The UK lays claim to being the first count ry to produce electricity from nuclear power on a commercial scale and has often ploughed its own furrow\, initially choosing indigenous reactor desig ns rather than following international trends. What are the reasons underly ing the erratic development of nuclear power in the UK and what lessons can be learned for future policy decisions\, whether in the UK or elsewhere\, where infrastructure projects with long-term effects are concerned?
I n this talk Tony explains how two key organisations\, the United Kingdom At omic Energy Authority and the Central Electricity Generating Board\, evolve d over time and the how key individuals played a pivotal role. This talk di scusses the non-technical and technical reasons for the long delay before t he UK adopted the Pressurised Water Reactor (PWR) design\, and the roles pl ayed by some key figures in securing acceptance of the claimed reliability for the integrity of the reactor pressure vessel.
Tony will then outl ine the changes in politics\, policies and public attitudes occurring over the 30- year period between the Sizewell B public inquiry report (1986) lea ding to the approval in 2016 for the next UK nuclear power station - an EPR at Hinkley Point C.
Tony will also discuss some of the other options for reactor designs that might be adopted should there be a continued revi val of the nuclear programme in the UK such as Small Modular Reactor (SMR) and fusion.

Globally\, peatlands are
the largest land-based carbon reservoir\, storing more carbon than the

The tiny Sphagnum bog moss is the keystone species

People are increasingly talking about home retrofit - retrospectively fitting energy saving improvements to a home - as a way to help the UK meet its climate targets and fix our incredibly col d\, damp and unhealthy homes!
In this talk\, Jonathan Atkinson of the Carbon Co-op and People Powered Retrofit outlines the background behind re trofit: separately space heating demand from a U value and helping to answe r the eternal questions: what is a heat pump and how does it work??
J onathan Atkinson is an Environmental Scientist with a background in co-oper atives and environmental action who is one of the co-founders of the Manche ster-based Carbon Co-op. Carbon Co-op is a unique social enterprise that he lps people and communities to make the radical carbon savings required to t ackle climate change!

DESCRIPTION: A look into why we need oxygen\, some possible causes of why w e lack oxygen in our body and understanding how to get more oxygen into our body through Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy. Speaker: Sarah Todd Director and c entre Manager at Oxify X-ALT-DESC;FMTTYPE=text/html:Biomarkers can take many f orms in the body\, but in the case of cancer they are often cells (known as Circulating Tumour Cells)\, proteins or DNA that have been shed by the tum our and can be measured in the bloodstream of a cancer patient. More common ly\, they are measured in the patient’s tumour.
Ideal ly\, we want to be able to use a simple blood test\, instead of an invasive biopsy\, to help us ask many questions about that patient and their cancer \, in order to treat their disease better. Understanding how different biom arkers are produced and how they are altered in cancer can help scientists to detect cancer sooner\, or determine if it is likely to respond to a cert ain type of treatment. Kathryn’s team are primarily focused on small cell l ung cancer (SCLC)\, a very aggressive form of lung cancer.
Because it is so difficult to obtain tissue samples to study SCLC in a laboratory setting\, the team developed pre-clinical models known as CDX models. These are derived from Circulating Tumour Cells which are highly ab undant in SCLC patients and can be grown in mice (strictly regulated by the Home Office)\, to then provide ample tissue to study and understand SCLC. Our research focuses on building this understanding\, in order to develop b etter treatments and to understand how the cancer changes over time. Ultima tely this research encompasses the overall goal of the National Biomarker C entre\, which is to deliver biomarker-driven clinical trials\, leading to b etter treatments to improve the lives of people with cancer.
Kathryn runs the Preclinical Pharmacology Team in the Cancer Resear ch UK National Biomarker Centre.
